Blind Dave Heeley
Mastered: Marathon Running and fundraising
Dave Heeley has been hitting the headlines for quite a few years now thanks to his mammoth endurance efforts which have included completing 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents in 2008 - he is the first and only blind person in the world to achieve this.
At around ten years of age, Dave was diagnosed with an eye complaint called Retinitis Pigmentosa; it meant he was going blind but his lack of sight has not stopped him from achieving amazing goals.
As well as marathon running he is also a motivational speaker; became the Physical Activities Champion for Sandwell Council; and an Ambassador for the Birmingham Half Marathon. He was also acknowledged with an award by the High Sheriff of the West Midlands.
He has been involved with many charities, including running the first Birmingham half marathon for the Kidney Kids appeal with ‘Team Blind Dave’.
He has run/cycled John O’groats to Lands End in aid of Macmillan cancer support in their centenary year with the grueling top2toe challenge and continually competes in the Great North Run and London Marathons. He was a torchbearer carrying the Olympic Flame for the London games and took part in the opening Ceremony of the Paralympics.
Dave’s running achievements and charity fundraising are so immense there doesn’t seem to be a day that goes by without a significant milestone reached!
'From Light to Dark' Blind Dave’s autobiography is out now in paperback.
