Mastered: Radio presenting
Dudley-born Jenny Wilkes is a well-known voice throughout the West Midlands. Her first experience of radio was at DDHB (Dudley and District Hospital Broadcasting) at the age of 14, and she’s been behind a microphone ever since.
Jenny joined BRMB Radio in Birmingham straight from university, and was soon presenting a youth show called “Whaddayawant.” She moved to BBC WM in 1982 and since then has presented many shows over the years, both on BBC WM and on network radio. She has worked at Radio 1, Radio 4, BBC Five Live and Midlands Today.
Jenny currently presents The Soul & Motown Show every Sunday afternoon, 1-3pm on BBC WM, which has a huge following both locally and globally via the BBC i-player. She loves being able to play her favourite tunes on the radio, taking her back to her days at Top Church Youth Club in Dudley.
She is also Events and Partnership Manager for BBC Midlands, and is proud to be flying the flag for the BBC in the region.
Jenny has been a Wolves supporter since the age of 10 when her Dad took her to Molineux to introduce her to the family tradition. She’s had a close involvement with the club over many years and can remember interviewing Graham Turner in his office when he had a bucket in the corner to catch the drips from the leaky roof. Her loyalty to the club has included dying her hair gold and black to present a radio show live from Wembley Way before the Sherpa Van Trophy victory in 1988, and broadcasting live from the Molineux pitch with Billy Wright and Ferenc Puskás for the official opening of the Billy Wright Stand in 1993 when all the floodlights went out!
Jenny is President of Wolverhampton Wanderers Official Supporters’ Club – a position which she was honoured to be invited to take on after the death of former President Billy Wright. She is also Chair of Wolverhampton Wanderers Girls’ and Women's Football Club, which continues to go from strength to strength.
She is proud of her Black Country roots and has lived and worked in several cities, but these days you’ll find her living in her favourite place - back in Dudley where it all began.
