Mastered: Community Arts
Karl was an integral part of the Sandwell Ceramic Flowers project by Creative Arts. The eye-catching garden of 1,200 handmade ceramic flowers was created by people with disabilities from across the Black Country. The centre's service users – who have a range of learning and physical disabilities – painted the glazes and put the finishing touches to the flowers ready for public display.
Karl took part in everything from building the base to painting the flowers and really put his heart and soul into it the project. Creative Arts project co-ordinator Richard Flatley says: “When he arrived eight years ago he had difficulties concentrating and was a bit disruptive in group activities. He has worked very hard down the years and vastly increased his powers of concentration. Consequently, his levels of skill have greatly improved and he is able to manage his life in a more balanced fashion. He supports his fellow artists, he is enormously popular. His sense of humour is inclusive and irresistible. He has an uplifting and attractive personality.”
It's not by accident that he has been the "poster boy" photo model for so many Sandwell Council project initiatives down the years. He is the kind beating heart of the artists group at Creative Arts.
